Metal Injection Molding ApplicationsAn increasing number of industries have found ways to use the MIM process to their advantage. Customers who require physical properties not available with plastic injection molded or die cast materials are turning to MIM. MIM also provides a cost-effective, automated alternative to the labor-intensive investment casting process. With highly complex geometries available, MIM may be an effective alternative to complex machined components or intricate assemblies. MIM excels at producing small, complex components that require thin, uniform cross sections (up to .250”). Typically, the cost of the raw material and acceptable molding practices limit the size and thickness of the parts. Customers with requirements for higher annual part volumes quickly realize substantial savings. Although MIM can be a cost-effective solution for small, complex parts at lower volumes, the cost of molding tools associated with a high volume process discourage lower volume applications.
