SSI-Sintered Specialties Receives the 2003 MPIF Award of Distinction for Outstanding Application of Powder Metallurgy

June 11, 2003 -- The 2003 International Powder Metallurgy Design Competition, sponsored by the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) in Princeton, New Jersey, recognizes the Sintered Specialties Division of SSI Technologies, Inc. with the "Award of Distinction" in the stainless steel category.

The winning entry consisted of a cross sampling of projection welded, angled and straight HEGO (Hot Exhaust Gas Output) sensor bosses. These components represent the different styles of sensor bosses produced by SSI-Sintered Specialties and supplied to all N. American OEMs, various transplant companies, and overseas manufacturers by means of tier-one exhaust system suppliers.

Sensor boss applications have become one of the fastest growing consumers of PM stainless steel powder. This growth continues to accelerate because of the significant advantages of powder metallurgy over various wrought metallurgical processes such as machining, cold heading, or stamping. These advantages include substantial cost savings, greater design flexibility, larger material selection, net shape capability, and better dimensional stability during welding.

Based on the increasing number of domestic and global inquiries, exhaust system suppliers are looking to make use of this technology and realize the numerous benefits it has to offer.

SSI-Sintered Specialties Wins MPIF Grand Prize for Technology

Innovative powder metallurgy (PM) parts were recognized in the 2002 International PM Design Competition sponsored by the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF). The 2002 MPIF Grand Prize Award in the Stainless Steel Category was awarded to the Sintered Specialties Division of SSI Technologies, Inc. for a cutting-edge application of P/M technology.

The winning parts are a series of thirteen Full Density 316L stainless steel rotor hubs that operate in a rotary pump for processing foods. Several of the net shape parts are sinter bonded together to create a structurally sound interface that eliminates food particles from getting trapped.

The parts are made to a density of 7.7g/cm and have an ultimate tensile strength of 85,000psi, a yield strength of 45,000psi, and 45% elongation. These properties are comparable to annealed wrought metal and exceed cast metal.

Secondary operations are limited to broaching the center hole and machining the sealing faces. Cost reductions ranged up to 60% compared with castings or machining the hubs from bar stock.

This award is the second grand prize award in the stainless steel category awarded to Sintered Specialties in five years by the Metal Powder Industries Federation.

In 1997 Sintered Specialties was awarded the Part-Of-The-Year Grand Prize in the Stainless Steel Category for two automotive manifold flanges.
